What Data Does TradeSmith Import from My Broker?
A clear overview of what data TradeSmith imports when you sync your broker, and what data may be missing or unsupported.

Published: May 21, 2026.

When you link your broker to TradeSmith, we import as much data as possible to help you track your portfolio accurately. However, there are some limitations depending on your broker and account type. This article explains exactly what comes in — and what doesn't.

What Broker Sync Does Import

When your broker account is successfully synced, TradeSmith will import the following data for each position:

  • Symbol — the ticker symbol of the security
  • Quantity (Shares) — the number of shares held
  • Total Cost Basis — used to calculate your entry price per share
  • Entry Date and Entry Price — imported from recent transaction history where available (see limitations below)
  • Options data — expiration date, strike price, and call/put status where available (see limitations below)

The following fields are sourced or derived separately from the broker sync:

  • Latest Close — sourced from an external market data feed, not from your broker
  • Value — derived by multiplying the imported share quantity by the latest close
  • Dividends and Corporate Actions — sourced from a separate external data feed, not from your broker (see limitations below)

This is why the value shown in TradeSmith may differ slightly from the value shown at your broker, as each uses its own pricing source.

What May Be Missing or Limited

Not all data is available from every broker. The following may be incomplete or missing depending on your broker and account setup:

Entry Dates and Entry Prices

TradeSmith only receives recent transaction history from your broker. Entry dates and prices may be missing if:

  • The position was purchased more than 90 days ago
  • The required data is not on the same page within your broker account
  • The data is returned in a format our system cannot read

You can add missing entry dates and prices manually using the Bulk Edit option. See Synchronized Broker Data - Entry Dates and Prices for instructions.

Options Data

Expiration date, strike price, and call/put status can sometimes be missing for synced options positions. If this happens, the position will appear with just the underlying symbol and a red triangle labeled "Symbol not Recognized." You can enter the missing details manually by clicking the symbol. See Synchronized Broker Data - Options for instructions.

Unsupported Security Types

TradeSmith does not support all security types. Bonds and certain other instruments will not be imported, even if they appear in your broker account. This means your TradeSmith portfolio value may differ from your brokerage value. See Sync is Showing Incorrect Balances or Missing Positions for more details.

Margin Balances

If you have a margin account, margin balances and borrowing are not reflected in TradeSmith. This can cause the portfolio value shown in TradeSmith to differ from the value shown at your broker.

Cash and Cash-Equivalent Balances

TradeSmith does report a cash balance, which is a combination of cash holdings, money market funds, and CD-type holdings imported from your broker. However, the total cash figure shown in TradeSmith may not always match your broker exactly, as our data aggregator may not correctly identify all cash-equivalent holdings in every account. If you notice a discrepancy in your cash balance, please contact our support team.

Dividends and Corporate Actions

Dividend payments, stock splits, and other corporate actions are sourced from a separate external data feed rather than directly from your broker. While this data is generally reliable, there may occasionally be delays or discrepancies. If you notice any missing or incorrect dividend or corporate action data, please contact our support team.

Why Your TradeSmith Value May Differ from Your Broker Value

It is normal for the value shown in TradeSmith to differ slightly from the value shown at your broker. Common reasons include unsupported securities, margin balances, recently sold positions not yet detected, and differences in pricing sources. For a full explanation, see Sync is Showing Incorrect Balances or Missing Positions.
