Navigating The Positions Tab

Published: September 23, 2025

Last Update: May 7, 2026

The Positions tab gives you a complete view of all your open and closed positions. To access it, go to My Portfolios and select Positions.

Since this page is packed with helpful information, we’ll break it down into sections—starting from the top.

In the top left corner, you’ll select your portfolio from the drop-down.  After you’ve selected a portfolio, you can see the portfolio’s values, total gains, daily gains, portfolio cash, and the latest close date.

The Filters button lets you narrow your view using filters, such as asset type, position type (long/short), Long-term and Short-term Health, status, risk, and many others.

Hit the Apply Filters button to tailor the types of positions you want to view.

Below is the More Details button.

Clicking it reveals additional statistics about your portfolio.

Note: The Portfolio Cash can only be updated (green edit pencil) on a manually created portfolio (not a synced portfolio).

The pie charts for the selected portfolio(s) include the Long-term and Short-term Health distribution, asset allocation, VQ allocation, and the dollar amount at risk for each position.

The At Risk graph shows how much you could lose on a position, based on the Health (Long-Term) stop price. It’s calculated by taking the LT Health stop-loss price minus the latest close, then multiplying by your number of shares.

When you’re ready to move on, click Less Details to exit the expanded view and return to your holdings.

When viewing your positions, you can switch between viewing open, closed, or all positions.

In the screenshot above, we’re looking at open positions—easy to spot because each holding displays an Open icon in the Open/Closed column.

The Add Position button allows you to manually add positions to your portfolio. (Keep in mind that manual positions can’t be added to a synchronized portfolio.)

On the right side of the page, you’ll find tools to search for securities, adjust your position views, add a new view, and print or export your data.

You can customize your views and adjust the column headers displayed.

To edit the active view, click the white edit pencil icon. To create a new view, click the triangle drop-down menu and select "Add View."

Once you click on the white edit pencil icon or create a new view, you will see your available TradeSmith indicators, position details, gains, summary, fundamentals, performance, and options-based metrics you can add as column headers.

A green check box indicates an active column header. To rearrange the order of your column headers, click and hold the left mouse button, then drag and drop the column to its preferred location.

Our development team has taken customization of your Position Views a step further, adding an edit pencil icon that lets you modify column names and adjust the number of decimal places for each metric.

When you’re happy with your setup, click the Save button. For a new view, enter a title in the View Name field, then click Save as New to finish.

The Remove All button will clear all selected position views from the board, allowing you to start with a clean slate.

To the far left of each ticker, you’ll see white selection boxes. Clicking these allows you to select multiple positions at once. When positions are chosen, a set of bulk action options will appear at the bottom of the screen.

From here, you can:

  • Add Alert
  • Bulk Edit
  • Copy positions into another manual portfolio
  • Delete positions
  • Group positions
  • Move positions to another manual portfolio

Next to the white selection boxes, you’ll notice small blue arrows. Clicking these gives you quick access to actions such as deleting, closing, moving, or copying a position. Keep in mind that the "Close" and "Move" functions apply only to manual portfolios—you won’t be able to close or move positions within a synchronized portfolio; however, you can delete positions, so please be careful. You can also copy a synchronized position and move the copy to another manual portfolio.

The Status column shows whether a position is synced or manual and indicates the status of any alerts. A white bell with a ‘0’ means no alerts are set. A grey solid bell with a number indicates the number of active alerts, and a purple bell indicates that an alert has been triggered.

The Risk (VQ%) pertains to our risk metric, the Volatility Quotient. The VQ tells you how risky your positions are.

Here’s a VQ breakdown:

  • Up to 15% = Low Risk
  • 15% to 30% = Medium Risk
  • 30% to 50% = High Risk
  • Above 50% = Sky-High Risk

The Long-Term and Short-Term Health Indicator column shows the current condition of your position over the next 12 months or longer (LT) and over the next 3 months or less (ST).

Each Health button will indicate how long it has been in its current health state.

For example, in the first LT Health, the ticker has been stopped out per the Health Indicator (Red Zone) for about 1 month. The "1m+" stands for months.

  • d = days
  • w = weeks
  • m = months
  • y = years
