This guide walks you through connecting your broker to TradeSmith for the first time using broker synchronization. Once set up, TradeSmith will automatically import your holdings and refresh them every 24 hours.
Before You Begin
- Check that your broker is supported by reviewing the list for your region in Which US Brokers Do You Support? (or the equivalent for Canada, UK, or Australia). If your broker isn't listed, see What to Do If Your Broker Is Not Listed.
- Have your brokerage username and password ready.
- Log out of your brokerage account in all browser tabs and windows before starting. This helps prevent credential conflicts during the setup process.
Step 1: Go to My Portfolios > Manage
Log into TradeSmith Finance and navigate to My Portfolios, then click the Manage tab.

Step 2: Click Add Portfolio
Click the green Add Portfolio button. You'll be presented with three options:
- Link to Brokerage — automatically imports your holdings via broker sync
- Add Manually — enter positions one by one
- Upload CSV File — import a spreadsheet of your holdings
Select Link to Brokerage to proceed with synchronization.

Step 3: Review the Security Information and Continue
TradeSmith uses Yodlee Fastlink, a secure data integration service that uses bank-level encryption and industry-leading security standards to connect to your broker. Click Continue to proceed.
Step 4: Select Your Broker
Choose your broker from the list of popular brokerages, or use the search bar to find it. If your broker doesn't appear, it may not be supported for synchronization — see What to Do If Your Broker Is Not Listed for your options.
Step 5: Enter Your Brokerage Credentials
Type your brokerage username and password manually. Be cautious with password managers — they may attempt to autofill your TradeSmith login credentials instead of your brokerage credentials. Click Sign In or Log In to continue.
Step 6: Complete Any Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
If your broker uses MFA, you may be prompted to enter a verification code sent to your phone or email. Complete this step as directed. For more details on MFA and broker sync, see Two-Factor Authentication.
Step 7: Wait for the Import to Complete
The import process may take a few minutes. Once complete, you'll be redirected back to the Manage tab where you can review your newly imported portfolio(s).
What to Expect After Setup
- TradeSmith will automatically sync your portfolio every 24 hours. Please note that this automatic sync applies to brokers that do not require two-factor authentication (2FA) as an additional security step. If your broker uses 2FA, you will need to complete the authentication manually each time before a sync can run. See Two-Factor Authentication for more details.
- Some data such as entry dates and prices may need to be added manually if your broker does not provide complete transaction history. See Synchronized Broker Data - Entry Dates and Prices for more details.
- If your portfolio doesn't appear to have refreshed, you can trigger a manual refresh at any time. See Refreshing an Existing Portfolio.
