Your Best Trades Start with a Checklist

The TradeSmith Checklist Feature

The Checklists feature in TradeSmith is a trade discipline tool that helps you evaluate whether a potential trade meets your personal entry criteria before committing to it.

It is available across stocks, options, and cryptocurrencies, and is available to TradeStops, Crypto by TradeSmith, Options360, TradeSmith Essentials, and TradeSmith Platinum accounts.

Note: Availability to create checklists for certain asset types depends on your subscription. For example, you need a Crypto by TradeSmith account to create a crypto checklist.

The Checklists feature allows you to see at a glance whether a trade aligns with their predefined entry criteria. If a trade doesn't meet all checklist items, you may choose to pass on the opportunity. If most criteria are satisfied, you may decide the trade is strong enough to pursue, helping reinforce consistent, rules-based trading habits.

To access your Checklists, go to the Checklist page at the top navigational header.

TradeSmith provides industry-standard checklists tailored for options strategies, available to Options360 and TradeSmith Platinum accounts.

You can also build your own by clicking the Add Checklist button on the upper right.

Start by naming your checklist and add any notes to remind you why you created it or what its purpose is. You will then select the asset type from the Asset Type drop-down menu. Please keep in mind that if you do not have access to our crypto or options-dedicated programs, these asset types will not be available to you.

Let’s start with a Stock Checklist.

Below, you can customize your checklist with numerous filters. We display popular filter items; however, you can click the “Manage Filters” link to expand the filters window.

For any must-have items, click the star to make them shine bright!

The filters are categorized under TradeSmith, General, Fundamentals, Performance, and Other. Please note that the filters available to you depend on your TradeSmith subscription.

Now, let’s review the Checklist features for creating an options checklist.

After you name your options checklist and select the asset type, you will be prompted to check your option strategy.

Below, you will notice the filters are organized by Underlying Asset Filters (1) and Option Filters (2).

In the above screenshot, the investor "must-have" the underlying asset in the Short-Term Green Zone. There are also several stars that mark his must-haves for option filters.

To add or manage your option filters, click the "Manage Filters" link.

As you can see, there are numerous options-related filters you can incorporate to ensure your trade entry criteria are met.

How do I use my Checklist?

When researching a new potential trade, you can go to the Trade Summary page to determine if the ticker meets your trade entry checklist.

For example, you can "Search for Ticker" or click on a prospective ticker from a watchlist portfolio or basket.

From the Asset Details page, click the More Actions button and select "Trade Summary."

Along with the Trade Overview card, which includes our indicator readings for the ticker, you can determine if the ticker meets your checklist.

According to the "My Stock Entry Criteria" checklist, 2 of 3 criteria matched. You may decide to skip the trade if your "must-haves" are not met.

Please take some time to create your checklists, which serve as a built-in trading discipline layer, ensuring you validate each opportunity before pulling the trigger.
