What is a Signal?
A signal is a pattern. Specifically, it’s a set of market conditions that has shown up before – and when it did, the stock tended to move in a predictable direction more often than not.
One important thing to understand: a signal isn’t a prediction. It’s a probability. It tells you what has usually happened under similar conditions – not what will definitely happen now.
To learn more about what a Signal is, go to Guide 2: "Signals Dashboard Quick Start Guide."
How Signals Are Built:
Every trading day, the Signals system analyzes all stocks in the S&P 500. It covers hundreds of different entry rules and dozens of potential exit rules. That adds up to more than 2 million potential trade evaluations a day – and more than 500 million a year.
From a large universe, the system filters down to high-quality, consistent signals—these are displayed on your Dashboard, which includes the tabs on your Signals page (Top Signals, Today’s Signals, Rule Playbook, My Alerts, and Signal Studies).
To learn more about how Signals are built, go to Guide 1: "How to Use Signals."
Each signal is built from two parts:
- Entry rules define the conditions that must occur for a signal to trigger. The system doesn’t guess or anticipate. If the conditions aren’t met, no signal appears. When you see a signal, it means the setup has already happened – not that it’s about to.
- Exit rules define when the signal is complete. Every signal has a predefined exit – based on time, price, volatility, or a combination. This tells you when to close the trade, regardless of whether it made a profit. Signals don’t stay active forever, and exits are designed to manage risk.

The highest-quality setups available today are sorted by our Quality Score.
The Quality Score is a summary measure that helps you compare signals. It combines several dimensions of historical performance into one standardized score. Those dimensions include the average gain or loss across all previous signals, the number of times the signal has appeared, and the typical risk associated with it.
