Getting Started with Trade Cycles

Whether you’re new to investing or have years of experience, the Screener tool helps you quickly narrow thousands of stocks down to the ones that matter most to you. By filtering out what doesn’t fit your criteria, you save time and focus on better opportunities.

Let’s dive right in.

To access the Screener tool, go to the Invest page at the top navigational header and select the Screener tool tab below.

The Screener tool’s homepage displays the most commonly used category filters by default. You can apply these filters right away or add more by clicking the Add Filter button. The black Filters button in the top-left corner lets you show or hide the filters panel and displays the number of currently applied filters. Any active filters will appear in black, while inactive filters remain gray.

When you click the Add Filter button, a window will display your available TradeSmith proprietary metrics as well as other technical and fundamental metrics.

Please keep in mind that the filters available to you will vary depending on your TradeSmith subscription.

The black-numbered bubbles indicate how many filters were selected in each filter category.

For example, one metric was chosen under “TradeSmith Proprietary Metrics” (Short-term Health).

Your Trade Cycles Filters

Your Cycles and Seasonality filters are available under the Trade Cycles by TradeSmith category.

  • Days to Cycle Start Date: shows how many days remain until the stock’s next projected turn area begins
  • Cycle Period: duration of the stock’s cycle (composite, very long-term, long-term, middle-term, and short-term cycles)
    • The composite cycle is a normalized view of all available cycle periods for the given stock.
  • Cycle Turn Area: cycle turning periods (Peak and Valley).
  • Cycle Conviction Level: confidence level in cycle predictions.
  • Optimal Seasonal Pattern Only: stocks that have optimal seasonal patterns
  • Seasonal Synergy Signals Only: triggers when an optimal seasonal pattern qualifies for its optimal Relative Strength Index (RSI) level.
  • Seasonality Years Under Review: number of years used for seasonal analysis.
  • Days to Seasonality Pattern Start Date: countdown to seasonal patterns.
  • Seasonality Pattern Accuracy Rate: historical accuracy of seasonal patterns.
  • Seasonality Pattern Average Return: historical average return from seasonal patterns.
  • Seasonality Pattern Annualized Return: yearly return based on historical seasonal data.

Pro Tip: Not sure which category your preferred metric falls under? Simply search for it in the “Search for filter” field.

Let’s review a few more tool features before we click the Run Screener button.

  • The Remove button, in any filter category, removes it from your scan.
  • The Clear Filters button clears the criteria you set in each filter category, leaving the filter categories themselves in place.
  • The Display & Sort Results menu allows you to adjust how you view your results.

For example, in the above image, the top 100 results will be sorted by market capitalization in descending order. The "Auto-add selected filters as column" toggle automatically shows any filters and sorting criteria you select as column headers in your results.

For example, since I chose "market cap" in my display and sort, the tool will automatically add it as a column header. The same goes for any filters I add to my screener.

However, this setting does not save those columns to your view. If you want them included permanently, you'll need to manually add them and save your view.

Results are displayed once you add your filter preferences and hit the Run Screener button.

Please remember that the more filters you assign to your screener, the more limited your results will be.

If you want to save your pre-set filters, hit the Save button and select “Save as New” from the drop-down menu.

Pre-Saved Screeners

You can select from your pre-saved screeners on the upper right. The pre-saved screeners include the screeners you saved and the pre-built TradeSmith screeners.

Note: The TradeSmith screeners shown are available with a Trade Cycles by TradeSmith account. You can view the top results for each TradeSmith Screener on the Scans tab of the Invest page.

You can adjust any pre-saved filter preferences or add additional filters. If you make any changes to your saved screeners, don’t forget to click the “Save Changes” link from the button:

The More Actions button to the right of your pre-saved filters lets you add or edit the Screener description, copy the Screener’s URL, or delete your saved screener.

When reviewing your results, you can sort any column header alphabetically or numerically. The beauty of this tool is that you can make it your own by adjusting the displayed column headers.

You can edit the default view by clicking the white edit pencil in the active view. You can also create a new view by clicking the drop-down triangle and selecting the “Add View” link.

You will see numerous TradeSmith indicators, as well as general, fundamental, and performance-based metrics that you can check to include in your screener views. Your views will depend on your TradeSmith subscriptions.

The gray boxes are filters you selected when creating your screener; however, they are temporary until you click them to add a green check mark.

The column headers can be rearranged by clicking and holding the column header with your left mouse key and dragging it to its preferred location.

Don’t forget to hit the Save button if you make any changes.

Flexibility is key. To save your results, click the top box to select all tickers, then save them as a new basket or add them to an existing basket.

You can also print and export your results, giving you full control over your data.
