Hi everyone! Kristin Magenst here. I am your Product Education Specialist.
I'm excited to guide you through one of the most powerful tools in your investment toolkit—the Screener tool. Whether you're a seasoned investor or just starting out, mastering this tool will allow you to filter through thousands of stocks based on criteria that are most important to you. Imagine the time you will save by eliminating stocks that do not meet your predefined criteria.
Let’s go to the Screener tool and scan for Money Mover Opportunities.
To access the Screener tool, click on the Screener tab from the Invest page.
The Screener tool homepage will display the most common category filters used by our members. You can use these preferences or add additional filters by clicking the Add Filter button.
You will notice that by default, the top results are displayed and sorted by market cap in descending order. Adjusting your filter preferences will narrow down your results.
Please remember that the more filters you assign to your screener, the more limited your results will be.
For example, let’s play around with a few of these filters so you can see how it works.
I want to show you a simple Bullish Money Movers screener that incorporates our Health Indicator for a more conservative approach.
I will select the following filters:
- Health Status: Green Zone
- Trend: Up
- Asset Type: Stocks
- Money Movers Score: More than 50
Other Money Movers filters include Institutional Ownership, Mutual Fund Ownership, and Insider Transactions.
When you click on the Add Filter button, you will see a drop-down menu of all your available filter categories. Let’s add the Free Cash Flow Yield. Free Cash Flow Yield is a way for investors to see how much free cash a company has left over after paying for its expenses.
The Money Movers score takes into account insider and institutional ownership and insider transactions, so unless you have a preference for a particular type of ownership or transaction, you can use the Money Movers score filter alone.
Once we select our filters, let’s set our preferences. I am giving you a simple guideline. You can of course make it your own, adjust the parameters and add additional filters.
Ideally, 80 to 100 would constitute a strong buy; however, when I ran the Money Movers score with “More than 80,” I did not obtain results. You may have to ease up on the parameters to get more results and start broad on the number of filters you use. You can always narrow your results and add additional filters.
When you are ready, hit the Run Screener button.
When reviewing your results, you can sort the columns alphabetically or numerically. You can also adjust and rearrange your column headers as you learned about with your Opportunities tab.
When I scroll to the far right, I can see the Money Movers Score. I don’t want to scroll to see this valuable information, so I will edit my Default View.
To edit your Default View, click on the white edit pencil. You can also create your own view by selecting the “Add View” link from the drop-down menu. A list of available filters will be displayed. If you scroll down to the column headers, you can rearrange them. I will left mouse click and hold and drag the Money Movers Score column to its preferred location.
Once you have your Screener tool position views organized, hit the Save button.
Flexibility is key. You can save your results as a new basket or add them to an existing one. You can also print and export your results from the top right of the screen, giving you full control over your data.
If you find a set of filters particularly useful, save them by clicking the Save As New button next to the Run Screener button. Adding a description can help you remember why this screener was effective.
To review or modify any saved screeners, click the “Back” link at the top left. This will return you to the tool's homepage.
You can re-run the screener by clicking the screener name. You can also view the filters assigned to any particular screener.
