In our platform, gains calculations automatically include any dividends that you may have earned since your entry date. This provides a more complete picture of the total gain for your holdings, as it not only includes gains or losses from the price action of the stock, but also includes added income from corporate actions (regular dividends, special dividends, and other company distributions).
The Gain including Dividends is displayed in your program at the top of the My Portfolios / Positions tab as the “Total Gain”, as well as in the default columns “Gain w/Div”, “Gain/Shr w/Div” and “Gain % w/Div”
If you sync your online Brokerage with TradeSmith, we receive the total number of shares that you hold now, and we currently only allow one entry date to be recorded. What this means for your Gains w/Div is that we are calculating the total dividends on all your shares going back to your original entry date and including this with your gain.
If you have a position where you have purchased more shares over time in multiple purchase lots, please keep in mind that we will be overstating your Gain w/Div amounts as you would have held fewer shares at your original entry date and therefore the dividends on those shares would have been less.
In this case, you can opt to show the gains ex/Div instead, which will just be the gains based on the price action of the stock only and not include any dividend gains. You can then refer to your brokerage website for a more accurate record of all dividends.
To edit your view, the following steps can be taken:
- Click the pencil icon on the right of your selected view.
- Deselect the “Gain w/Div”, “Gain/Shr w/Div” and “Gain % w/Div” columns.
- Select the “Gain ex Div”, “Gain/Shr ex Div” and “Gain % ex Div” columns.
- Click “Save” to save your new column selection.
You can also view the total Gain excluding Dividends for your portfolio by clicking the “More Details” link under your portfolio name and viewing the “Total Gain E/Div” amount.
Another option is to create a manual portfolio, and enter a separate position for each purchase lot, each with its own entry date and number of shares. The gains for each purchase lot will then be calculated separately.
