Trade Cycles' Model Portfolios
Getting Started with Trade Cycles

Published: January 22, 2026

Last Updated: July 14, 2026.

Trade Cycles offers model portfolios you can follow. Each one is built using historical price data and seasonal market patterns to help give you an edge.

These portfolios are automated, but our editorial team actively manages them — sending trade alerts and weekly updates from our analysts.

Where can I access my model portfolios?

To access your model portfolios, go to the Model Portfolios tab in the My Portfolios page.

The Model Portfolios page is split into two tabs: Overview and Portfolios.

The Overview tab provides information about the model portfolio, active holdings, and a performance graph as compared to the S&P 500.

The Portfolios tab allows you to view open, closed, or all positions and includes an expanded view of their position details and other performance metrics. You can also search for tickers and print and export on the upper right.

Seasonal Edge Stock and Options Model Portfolios

Seasonal Edge leverages a breakthrough new way to pinpoint dates on the calendar when certain stocks tend to shoot up — year after year. It's an automated system that combines calendar seasonality with momentum signals for S&P 500 stocks.

The two Seasonal Edge Model Portfolios include: Seasonal Edge Stocks and Seasonal Edge Options

Beyond historical performance at specific times of year, Seasonal Edge uses a selective multi-step process to identify only the highest-quality opportunities.

To qualify, a trade must meet all the following criteria:

  • Gains 80% of the time or more during the past 15 years
  • Average returns of at least 4%
  • Passes our Relative Strength Index (RSI) condition tests — specifically, the stock's RSI must be below the Optimal threshold for the trade at the previous close
  • Has yet to reach the Green Zone on our Short-Term Health indicator — the stock should still be in the Yellow Zone or even the Red Zone

Note that even a seasonality window with 100% historical accuracy won't qualify as "Optimal" if it fails to meet these other conditions — that's by design. Together, the RSI and Short-Term Health checks confirm that conditions are favorable for a strong rebound during one of our bullish seasonal windows, rather than adding a position that's already run its course.

If the pattern meets the above criteria at the start of the seasonality window, it triggers "Seasonal Synergy" and is added to the model portfolio.

This selectivity leaves a smaller pool of qualifying windows and fewer trades each year, but it ensures your Seasonal Edge trades have the highest chance of success. As the stock rebounds, the goal is a strong enough bounce to hit your profit target — the Trigger Price — typically set at 8%–12% gains.

Seasonal Edge Stock Exit Strategy

Each stock will have two exit criteria:

  • Historical average returns: considers the unique percentage gain it has typically achieved at that time in the past, on average.
  • Seasonal window: closes trade based on the seasonal pattern date range.

For example, we might expect it to gain 10%. Once we achieve that 10% gain, you will get an exit alert. Each alert shows a trigger price as the optimized exit value.

If we don’t ever achieve that 10% gain, you’ll instead get the exit alert at the end of the pattern date, so the day that the seasonal window closes.

Seasonal Edge Options Exit Strategy

The Seasonal Edge Options Model portfolio will find an options trade for each stock in the Seasonal Edge Stock Model portfolio that triggers seasonal synergy.

Our Seasonal Edge system is programmed to pick the first option strike above our entry price: the first out-of-the-money call contract on the target stock. Then, for the expiration date, it finds the option with the closest expiration date, provided it is at least 21 trading days away.

We typically get into and out of stocks and options on the same day. So, if the stock hits its profit target (Trigger Price), we get out of both (stock and option), and if it never does, we get out of both when the seasonal window closes. If the option expires before the window closes, close the option with a sell to close order on expiration day.

You will also receive an email containing the stock or option recommendation with the buy-up-to price and exit criteria.

Seasonal Advantage Model Portfolio

Seasonal Advantage is a long-term rotational strategy that rotates S&P 500 stocks into historically strong seasonal windows every month. It is intended to be followed consistently over time, and is built to generate an edge across many trades, not from any single trade.

Seasonal Advantage is a 5-stock portfolio updated once a month and is not based on the same type of Trade Cycles algorithm as Seasonal Edge.

We test all S&P 500 from the 9th trading day of the month to the next month. The stocks are sorted by win rate. From there, we use the top 100 candidates and apply our portfolio selection algorithm to find the best group of stocks to own (optimized on risk characteristics). The five are the best portfolio, not the five best individual stocks.

What is the difference between Seasonal Advantage and Seasonal Edge?

Seasonal Edge is a set of trades that are managed individually in TradeSmith, whereas Seasonal Advantage will be managed as a portfolio of (exactly) five stocks.

  • In Seasonal Advantage, if a stock remains in the top five, it will still be held in that model portfolio. The goal is to provide a long-term rotation strategy for seasonality traders.
  • In Seasonal Edge, stocks drop off the list when their seasonal window ends. The goal is to find optimal seasonality trades throughout the year.

The Navellier Edge is an automated model portfolio that combines two proven approaches: Louis Navellier's stock grading methodology and the seasonal trading windows identified by the Seasonal Edge system.

Navellier's methodology identifies stocks with the greatest potential to outperform the market by focusing on three key factors:

  • Strong fundamentals
  • Strong buying activity
  • Improving ratings trends

By layering these stock grades on top of Seasonal Edge's calendar-based windows, the Navellier Edge aims to combine quality stock selection with well-timed entry points.

To select the model portfolios you wish to display, click the Portfolios button on the upper right. From the drop-down menu, you can remove any portfolios you are not following.

It is also important to ensure your notifications are turned on if you are following any model portfolios.

This way, you will receive emails when positions are opened or closed, or when alerts are triggered. You can also rearrange the order in which your model portfolios are displayed by clicking and dragging the portfolio card by the vertical dots icon.

You can also access the Trade Cycles' Model Portfolios from the Trade Cycles website.

Why are there no holdings in the Trade Cycles portfolio?

Under Portfolios, you'll find another model portfolio — one that actually pre-dates both Seasonal Edge and Seasonal Advantage. We simply called it the Trade Cycles portfolio.

These were trade ideas identified by our senior analyst, William McCanless, whenever seasonality, our Cycles tool, and his own technical analysis of a stock's price chart all lined up.

That portfolio has since been retired — but you can still get William's insights through his weekly feature, Watchlist Wednesday.
