Create Portfolios or Baskets via CSV Import

Published: May 21, 2026.

You can connect your brokerage account to TradeSmith Finance in three different ways:

  • Link directly to your brokerage
  • Add positions manually
  • Upload a .csv file

To set up broker synchronization for the first time, see Setting Up Sync for the First Time: Step-by-Step.

This article walks you through the .csv upload method. Once you're logged into the site, please navigate to the My Portfolios page and open the Manage tab. From there, click the green Add Portfolio button to begin uploading your broker's .csv file.

Next, select Upload CSV File.

Please upload your portfolio as a CSV file using the option below. A CSV (Comma-Separated Values) file stores spreadsheet data in plain text and is the required format for import. If your portfolio is currently in Google Sheets or an Excel file (XLS or XLSX), you'll need to first export or save it as a CSV before uploading.

Once you have selected your file, click Import & Preview.

When previewing your file, you'll see your data organized into rows and columns. Use the drop-down menus at the top of each column to identify the type of information it contains. At the very least, you'll need a column for the stock symbol.

Available column options include: entry commission, entry date, entry price, number of shares, symbol, position type, exit date, exit price, and exit commission.

Keep in mind that the file your broker provides may include more data than you actually need. By previewing the file first, you can avoid unnecessary edits later and make the CSV import process much smoother.

For example, in the image above, I selected Symbol for the ticker column. There's no need to include extra details like the company name or health status—TradeSmith Finance will automatically fill in that information once your spreadsheet is uploaded. To keep things simple (and save yourself some editing), stick with the required columns.

You'll then need to specify whether you want to add this imported data to a new or existing basket or portfolio. If you select a New Basket or Portfolio, you must give it a name.

Finally, you will click the Finish and Import Data button.
